"Clean fill" is the material a disposal facility accepts without extra sorting or fees. It's the difference between a smooth drop-off and a load that gets flagged. Clean fill means:

• Dirt and sand — no buried trash, no root balls the size of a stump, no contaminated soil.
• Sod — grass and topsoil, not mixed with sprinkler line, edging plastic, or landscape fabric in bulk.
• Broken concrete and brick — plain masonry, ideally broken into pieces a person can lift. Rebar sticking a few inches out is fine; a slab still webbed with a full rebar grid is not.
• Block and stone — clean, unpainted where possible.

What's not clean fill: painted or treated wood mixed into the pile, large sheets of plastic or roofing felt, trash bags buried in the dirt, or anything wet with paint, oil, or chemicals. • Spread, don't pile. A flat layer across the floor is safer to haul and easier to estimate by eye than a mound in one corner.
• Keep it below the rim. Heavy material can never be mounded above the top edge — the load has to sit flat to leave your driveway.
• Separate clean fill from demo debris when you can. If a project produces both, ask about scheduling two pickups instead of mixing everything into one can.
