Roof tear-off dumpster sizing by squares: 10, 20, 30, 40 squares translated to shingle vs tile weight. Why a 20-yard roll-off's 2-ton limit matters more than volume in SW Florida.

Quick answer: For most Southwest Florida roofs, 10 to 40 squares of asphalt shingles, one 20-yard roll-off handles the tear-off. But the number that decides whether you're covered isn't cubic yards, it's weight. A square of 3-tab asphalt shingles runs roughly 200 to 300 lbs; tile can run 800 to 1,900+ lbs per square. A 30-square asphalt tear-off can land close to or over the standard 2-ton (4,000 lb) allowance included with a 7-day rental, and a 15-square tile roof can blow past it on its own. Know your square count and roofing material before you book.
Every roofer talks in squares because a square (100 square feet of roof surface) converts cleanly into bundles of shingles, underlayment, and nails. What most homeowners don't realize is that squares also convert cleanly into disposal weight, and weight is the number that actually controls your dumpster cost. Volume rarely runs out on a roofing job. Weight allowance does. That's the whole reason this calculator exists.
If you're mid-project and just need the general rundown on tear-off logistics, see our roof tear-off dumpster guide. If you're planning a full replacement start to finish, read what size dumpster for a full roof replacement for the process end of this. This page is just the squares-to-weight math.
These are general planning ranges for a single layer of tear-off debris. Multi-layer roofs (two or three layers of old shingles stacked) push toward the higher end of each range or above it.
| Squares | Asphalt Shingle Weight (approx.) | Tile Weight (approx.) | Fits in 20-yd + included 2 tons? |
| 10 squares | ~2,000-3,000 lbs | ~8,000-12,000 lbs | Shingle: yes. Tile: no, plan for overage. |
| 20 squares | ~4,000-6,000 lbs | ~16,000-24,000 lbs | Shingle: borderline. Tile: no, expect overage. |
| 30 squares | ~6,000-9,000 lbs | ~24,000-36,000+ lbs | Shingle: usually over, budget for it. Tile: significant overage. |
| 40 squares | ~8,000-12,000 lbs | ~32,000-48,000+ lbs | Shingle: over the included allowance. Tile: consider a second pickup. |
Ranges are wide on purpose. Actual weight depends on shingle type, number of layers, underlayment, and how much wet debris is mixed in after a storm. If you're not sure how those numbers apply to your total load beyond the roof, our dumpster weight limits explained page breaks down the overage math in more detail.
Even though weight climbs fast, KYN rents one size, the 20-yard roll-off, for a reason: it is the size that fits a standard driveway (about 22 ft long by 8 ft wide by 4 ft high) and still holds the volume of a 30 to 40-square tear-off without needing a second container on-site. The limiting factor on a heavy roof is never "does it fit," it's "how much does it weigh when it's full." That's a pricing conversation, not a sizing one.
Because tile carries so much more weight per square than shingle, KYN prices roofing dumpsters by material, not by a flat roofing rate:
These are not general zone rates, they reflect the material coming off your specific roof. A 15-square tile job and a 15-square shingle job are not the same disposal job, and the pricing reflects that honestly rather than surprising you with overage fees after the fact. Full detail on the roofing category lives on our roofing dumpster service page.
The single biggest variable that breaks the squares-to-weight estimate is layer count. A 20-square roof with one layer of shingles and a 20-square roof with three stacked layers of old shingles are wildly different disposal jobs, even though the square count on your work order is identical. If your roofer mentions "tear-off through to deck" or you know the home has been re-roofed over old shingles before, plan your budget toward the higher end of the ranges above, or ask us directly when you book.
This is also where contractors benefit from setting up ahead of a job rather than booking per-project. If you run roofing crews regularly, our contractor accounts page and the contractor dumpster pricing page cover volume rates built for exactly this kind of variability.
Know your square count, know your material (shingle or tile), and know your layer count. That's the whole calculator. Zone pricing is based on North Port and Port Charlotte; Punta Gorda adds $10, Englewood adds $15, Arcadia adds $25, and Venice is quoted directly. A driveway placement needs no permit; a public right-of-way placement needs city or county approval first.
