Why appliances aren't all treated the same

Cleaning out a kitchen, garage, or rental unit almost always means old appliances come with it. The good news: most of them are simple, heavy items that roll-off dumpsters handle every day. The catch is refrigerant. Any appliance that once cooled air — refrigerators, freezers, window or through-wall AC units, dehumidifiers, and wine coolers — contains refrigerant gas under Section 608 of the federal Clean Air Act. That gas has to be recovered by an EPA-certified technician before the unit can be scrapped or landfilled. Skipping that step isn't a small technicality; it's the difference between a legal disposal and a violation that can follow the property owner, not the hauler.

Getting refrigerant removed before pickup

This is the one step homeowners in North Port, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Englewood, Arcadia, and Venice most often miss. A few ways to handle it, in order of convenience:

• Ask your appliance retailer if they'll haul away the old unit when they deliver the new one — many will, at no cost.
• Call a licensed HVAC or appliance technician to recover the refrigerant on-site; keep the receipt or tag as proof.
• Check if your county's household hazardous waste program accepts whole appliances and handles the refrigerant recovery for you.
• Some scrap metal recyclers will pick up an intact refrigerator or AC unit and remove the refrigerant themselves before scrapping it.

Once the refrigerant is out and you have documentation, the empty appliance is treated the same as any other heavy item — it can go straight into your KYN dumpster.

Weight and space — one appliance rarely breaks the budget

A standard refrigerator or washer weighs somewhere between 150-300 lbs, so one or two appliances alongside a normal cleanout will not push a load past the included tonnage on most jobs. • Load appliances first, low in the dumpster, so their weight sits flat on the floor instead of shifting other debris.
• Remove doors or prop them open before loading so they don't swing and damage other items during pickup.
