How much a sheet of drywall weighs, how many fit in a 20-yard roll-off, and how to handle water-damage/mold gut jobs and dust control. SW Florida pricing inside.

By Roberto “Robert” Quiñones, Owner-Operator · KYN Hauling LLC

Quick answer: A single sheet of standard 1/2" drywall weighs roughly 50-60 lbs, so a gutted room's worth of sheetrock adds up fast. KYN's 20-yard roll-off (~7-8 pickup loads) handles most drywall demo and storm/water-damage gut jobs, and the standard 7-day rental includes 2 tons before overage kicks in.

How Much Does a Sheet of Drywall Actually Weigh?

Drywall weight depends on thickness, and thickness is the first thing to check before you load a dumpster. Here's what you're working with per standard 4x8 sheet:

ThicknessApprox. Weight (dry)Common Use
1/4"~35 lbsCurved walls, skim coats
3/8"~45 lbsResurfacing existing walls
1/2" (standard)~50-60 lbsMost interior walls
5/8" (fire-rated)~70-75 lbsGarages, ceilings, shared walls

That's dry weight. Once drywall has absorbed water from a leak, flooding, or storm intrusion, it can weigh noticeably more and often needs to come out anyway — soaked sheetrock is a mold risk that doesn't get better with time. If your job involves any water exposure, budget for extra weight and don't wait to start demo. See our dumpster weight limits guide for how tonnage is calculated at drop-off.

How Many Sheets Fit in a 20-Yard Roll-Off?

KYN runs one size — the 20-yard roll-off — because it's the size that fits a standard residential driveway without a permit and still holds enough for most single-family drywall jobs. As a rough guide, a 20-yard container can typically hold somewhere in the range of 150-250 standard 1/2" sheets by volume, but weight is usually the limit before space runs out. At roughly 50-60 lbs a sheet, 2 tons (4,000 lbs) of drywall alone works out to around 65-80 sheets before overage charges apply at $80-90/ton.

Water-Damage and Mold Gut Jobs After a Storm

Southwest Florida homeowners know the drill after a tropical system: standing water, a roof leak, or wind-driven rain gets behind the walls, and within 24-48 hours the drywall starts hosting mold growth. The remediation standard is simple — any drywall that's been wet needs to come out, not dry out in place. That means:

Because storm debris often includes drywall plus flooring, furniture, and yard debris all at once, weight adds up quickly. Our storm debris service and storm debris cleanup guide walk through sequencing a full storm gut job, and the hurricane prep debris plan helps you get ahead of it before the next system.

Dust Control During Drywall Demo

Drywall demo produces fine gypsum dust that travels through a house fast and settles into HVAC systems, furniture, and lungs. A few practical habits keep it manageable:

Positioning the roll-off close to your work entrance cuts down on how far dusty debris travels through the house. Check protecting your driveway for placement tips, and confirm whether you need a permit with our permit guide — a driveway placement never needs one, but public right-of-way does.
